With a Master's in English and Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching our fellow from Hyderabad, Telangana Mercy Priyanka.
After a financial loss in family business, there were a lot of material constraints for her to continue her higher education but by working from an early age and saving money Mercy Priyanka, with help of her brother financed her wedding and bought her jewellery.
She was always interested in doing social service and teaches housewives spoken English.
She joined the Indira Fellowship as it talks about women in politics; she believes that women in power are more likely to work for the betterment and well-being of society .
Through her Shakti Clubs she reaches out to younger women and women in slums. Often these women are unaware of their rights.
Indira Fellowship helped Mercy get some recognition.
She was the first in her family to join a political organisation. However she says “women in politics are seen differently, their true capabilities are undermined by men who believe that women should be homemakers not politicians. Further men tend to mistreat women in politics.”
She has political ambitions and wants to work towards giving women 50% HAQ and HISSEDARI and equality of opportunities in all spheres.
She has met many educated women who had to give up on their independence and their dreams. They are expected to act according to the wishes of their in-laws and husband.
She reaches out to many female college students and makes them realise that one has to learn to stand up for their own rights no one else will fight for them.
