Our fellow from Delhi, Saroj Yadav was born in Mumbai but she has her roots in UP.
She completed her education in Mumbai and has a degree in BCom.
Saroj wanted to work and provide for her family but her parents were pressured by her relatives to marry her off as it was believed to be a girl's true goal in life.
After getting married she was restricted to her home because her husband was posted in the army and her in- laws did not prefer a working daughter-in-law. She raised her two children and was busy with her domestic life
However, now that her children are all grown up she says “I needed a motivation to do something in life and opportunity to express herself and realise her capabilities.
She sees Indira Fellowship as a great opportunity for herself to evolve and dwelve into a sphere she is passionate about.
She believes that the dominant view has plagued our country.
She believes that the truth is being manipulated by one side deteriorating. She believes that individual choices are being denied and a dictatorship has taken over.
She says “in villages a source of respectable income is serving in the army but the current condition has been worsened”.
She also believes that there's a neglect of women's education under the current regime. The slogans that the government raised hasn't benefited poor women especially in the villages. Women are encouraged to only see marriage as their true goal in life, the educational opportunities are limited to upper caste and upper class women.
She wants to use the Indira Fellowship to spread awareness among women about their rights. She wants women to get new sources of employment.
A group of women she wants to help the most are widows. She says widowed women do not get proper economic opportunities or skill development. Some receive pensions but it's not enough.
She also wants to tackle the problem of poverty and begging among women and young children.
