Even though she was born in a politically influential family, our fellow Bhawna had a desire to bring about a change in the patriarchal structure that places conditions on women and is hostile towards women empowerment.
Her father has been a member of the Congress Party for over 25 years,
Bhawna recalls her earliest incident of discrimination she faced was right after being born. She is the second daughter of her parents and the extended family didn't welcome another daughter with open arms.
She recalls “they were very disappointed on my sister's birth but on my birth it was even worse, they wanted our parents to have a son as they felt daughters cannot achieve what son's can”

Although she completed her MCOM and is currently pursuing a PHD in commerce. Bhawna, like her father, was interested in politics.
“I always knew if I want to work towards female empowerment I will have to step into politics myself without his help, name or influence.”

Bhawa had met many female politicians who have access to positions of power, but she realised that these politicians were merely “rubber stamps” they have no agency and the true power lies with their husbands/ fathers who are the real decision makers.

She wanted to join politics not just for herself and be an effective leader that can actually work for women's emancipation.

She joined the Indira Fellowship to not only prove her self-worth to the world but also to work with women at the lowest levels. Although she's our fellow from Delhi, she hails from Dausa, Rajasthan where she has an active political presence.

Through her Shakti clubs she has come across women of all sections. She's worked with need and poor women who have a political will but no means to express themselves. She has worked alongside widows who do not enjoy many rights and form the most overlooked section of our society, local shopkeepers who earn a living and contribute financially towards their families yet do not enjoy freedom to engage in politics.
Bhawna feels that it is important for women to realize that financial independence gives women a voice.
After such experiences she sees herself now as a more vocal, confident, aware as well as a future politician with negotiating powers.
She is now recognised within the community by her work more than anything else.
